The Decomposition Method
Split each number: 47 = 40 + 7 and 35 = 30 + 5. Add tens: 40 + 30 = 70. Add ones: 7 + 5 = 12. Combine: 70 + 12 = 82. This three-step process works for any two-digit addition.
The left-to-right cascade is faster for some: start with the first number, add the tens of the second, then add the ones. For 58 + 26: 58 + 20 = 78, then 78 + 6 = 84. This sequential approach reduces the number of intermediate results you must hold in memory.
Advanced Tip: Compensation
