Multiplication Tables & Mental Tricks

Memorize and master multiplication tables using visual patterns and mental shortcuts.

What Are Multiplication Tables?

Multiplication tables are the set of products for single-digit numbers from 1 to 12 (or traditionally 1 to 10). Knowing these by heart is arguably the single most important skill in mental arithmetic. Every multiplication shortcut, percentage calculation, and division problem relies on instant recall of basic times tables.

Why Memorize Them?

Without solid table knowledge, every multiplication problem becomes a slow, error-prone process. With memorized tables, your brain can focus on strategy rather than computation. Students who know their tables solve math problems 3-5 times faster than those who don’t. The good news: tables follow patterns that make memorization easier than it seems.

Mental Tricks for Each Table

The 9s trick: Hold up both hands. To multiply 9 × n, fold down the nth finger. Fingers to the left give tens digits; fingers to the right give ones digits. For 9 × 7: fold finger 7 → 6 and 3 → 63.

The 5s trick: Multiply by 10 and halve the result. 5 × 8 = 80 ÷ 2 = 40.

Breaking apart: Any multiplication can be split. 7 × 6 = 7 × (5 + 1) = 35 + 7 = 42. This distributive approach works for every problem and builds algebraic thinking.

Practice Strategy

Learn one table at a time, starting with 2s, 5s, and 10s (easiest patterns), then 3s and 4s, saving 6s-9s for last. Use spaced repetition: review yesterday’s table before learning a new one. Songs, rhymes, and competitive games make practice enjoyable for children.

Practice Examples

Example 1: 7 × 8 = ?

  1. Recall the pattern: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56
  2. Or use 7 × 8 = (7 × 10) - (7 × 2) = 70 - 14 = 56

Answer: 56

Example 2: 9 × 6 = ?

  1. Use the 9s finger trick: fold down finger 6
  2. 5 fingers left, 4 fingers right → 54

Answer: 54

Example 3: 6 × 7 = ?

  1. Double 6 × 7: 6 × 7 = 6 × 5 + 6 × 2
  2. 30 + 12 = 42

Answer: 42
